Excel in Office

Welcome to the Excel in Office podcast.

This podcast is an audio version of the video courses that I created for Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. They aim to get you from beginner level to that needed for a certified Microsoft Master. Learn the skills that you need to get you to the Expert level and beyond.

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Master certification Demonstrate that you have the deepest level of skills needed to use Office programs proficiently by earning a Microsoft Office Specialist Master certification. It is an official Microsoft certificate that you can put onto your CV or resume, and to earn it, you need to take and pass 4 official Microsoft exams – generally, Word Expert, Excel Expert, PowerPoint, and one other program.

In my courses, I teach the content which is examined in those certifications. In other words, I show you what Microsoft wants you to learn. I should say, however, that my courses and this audio podcast is completely unofficial, and has no connection to the Microsoft corporation, or any of its subsidiaries.

Video courses

My video courses contain several hours of training each. The cost is only about US$10, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The teacher explains very well and at a good pace. Has real in-depth knowledge. The exercises are precise and well put together for the course. And the language sheets are invaluable to those that use other language than English version. I highly recommend this course. It goes thru most of the basic knowledge needed for Excel. Once again The teacher is excellent” — Daniel Sandberg

This is super helpful to me. I’m learning things I didn’t know existed in Excel.” – Jimmy Thrower

I had to take an Excel proficiency test as a job interview requirement , and scored top 10% percentile (they called me immediately to schedule a face-to-face) , thanks to your great course for which I studied for two days straight to re-enforce my knowledge in Excel, and more importantly fill those gaps of knowledge on all its functionality capabilities . You really get the MOST out of Phillip’s courses.” – Rick Romero

Review:

The knowledge of the teacher is impressive, and he knows how to teach. The speed of the course is just right. And going thru the exercises after each one is great. I only have one word for the teacher and the way he’s presenting the course WOW!!!” — Daniel Sandberg

This course covers one of the most useful, but scariest-sounding, functions in Microsoft Excel; PIVOT TABLES.

It sounds difficult, but in fact can be done in just a few clicks. We’ll do our first one in a couple of minutes – that’s all it takes. We’ll also add a chart as well in that time.

After only these first few minutes, you will be streets ahead of anyone who doesn’t know anything about Pivot Tables – it is really that important.

After this introduction, we’ll go into some detail into how to set up your Pivot Table – the initial data, and the various options that are available to you. We will go into advanced options that most people don’t even know about, but which are very useful.

By the end, you will be an Expert user of Pivot Tables, able to create reliable analyses which are able to be drilled-down quickly, and you’ll be able to help others with their data analysis.

It will assist with the Visualize Data section of the Microsoft exam 70-779 “Analysing and Visualizing Data with Microsoft Excel”.

Who is the target audience?
  • This is for you if you have ever heard of the “Pivot Table”, but didn’t know what it is or how to use it.
  • This is also for you if you use PivotTables, and want to go deeper. Much deeper. 🙂
  • We’ll also go into the more advanced functions, and create charts as well, quickly and easily.

Reviews:

This is a very good starting point in VBA. But doing this course one realize how extensive and huge VBA is. As always the teacher is great and one feels his in depth knowledge” — Daniel Sandberg

Welcome to Excel VBA – An Introduction. This course delves into the Visual Basic which allows you to automate Microsoft Excel (and other MS Office products).

Microsoft Excel is an extremely powerful tool – and yet most people only scratch the surface of what it can do. In addition to PivotTables, VLookup formulas and the like, you can also automate it. You can add buttons and forms to add interactive features – yet most people don’t even know it’s there. Maybe you have someone in your organization who is an absolute wizard, getting the computer to do things and walking away while it does it. Do you want to be able to do that? Welcome to wizard school – or in other words, Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).

In this course, I’ll assume that you have some fair knowledge of Excel – able to do basic formulas and colour cells and the like – but you don’t need any prior knowledge of VBA or any programming language for that matter. Of course, the more you already have, the better. I’ll take things nice and slowly. Each video will center around one new aspect, or we’ll consolidate what you already know with coding exercises.

Once you have finished the course, then you will be well on your way to developing your own macros to solve your own problems. And you’ll be able to take your new-found knowledge for use in Word and PowerPoint as well.

Who is the target audience?
  • This Excel VBA course is for you if you want to learn how to automate Excel and provide a better user interaction.
  • No prior programming language is required – although, it would always help!
  • This course is not for you if you are confident using VBA, and are looking for more advanced techniques.

This course covers one of the most useful add-ins in Microsoft Excel, PowerPivot, and the Tabular model in SQL Server Analytical Services.

We’ll activate PowerPivot if you have the right version of Excel, and if not, then we’ll install SQL Server on your computer, which can do the same job. We’ll install the Developer edition, which used to cost $100, for free.

After PowerPivot is activated, or SQL Server is installed, we’ll create our first analysis in Excel in just a matter of minutes.

After only these first few minutes, you will be streets ahead of anyone who doesn’t know anything about Power Pivot.

After this introduction, we’ll go into some detail into PowerPivot or SSAS – the initial data, and the various options that are available to you. We will go into advanced options that most people don’t even know about, but which are very useful.

Then we’ll develop DAX formulas, to further extend the model. A lot of the formulas are based on Excel formulas, but there are several additional things too.

By the end, you will be an Expert user of both PowerPivot and SSAS, able to create reliable analyses which are able to be drilled-down quickly, and you’ll be able to help others with their data analysis.

It will assist with the Model Data section of Microsoft exam 70-779 “Analysing and Visualizing Data with Microsoft Excel”.

It will also assist with the “Design a tabular BI semantic model” and “Develop queries using Data Analysis Expressions (DAX)” section of Microsoft exam 70-768 “Developing SQL Data Models”.

Who is the target audience?
  • This course is for people who want to create analyses.
  • You either want to do this in Excel, or you want to learn about SQL Server Analytical Services (Tabular edition).
  • This course isn’t for you if you want to learn SSAS (MDX version) – there are other courses for this.
